Professional Design Tools

Starting from the free design spreadsheets and using the theory presented in the book and on this website you could go a long way in creating your own advanced application. So why would you consider the purchase of a professional design tool ? On the other hand, obviously it will take you a lot of time to develop a flexible and tested application yourself. So it might be both convenient and much cheaper to obtain a tool that has already been developed and tested. Currently a professional tool is being developed and tested at the research group of Dr. van Haandel, scheduled for release in the first half of 2008. As soon as we have a more definitive date we will post it at the news page.

An advanced Excel based design tool is already available for nitrogen removal systems. The advantage of an Excel based tool is that you can easily adapt it to suit your needs, without having to master a programming language. A disadvantage is that Excel is not really suitable for complex programs.

Features

At present the nitrogen removal design tool contains the following features:

  • Input section with dropdown menu assisted data entry
  • Calculation of optimum nitrogen removal configuration for both pre-D and Bardenpho systems
  • Includes primary clarification, pre-precipitation (chemical phosphorus removal), final settling, excess sludge thickening, aeration (both surface and diffused aeration systems) and anaerobic digestion
  • Calculation of excess sludge quantity and composition
  • Minimal total costs design of the system of aeration tank and final settler using the solids flux or STOWA guidelines
  • Minimal total annualized costs design of the system of thickener and sludge digester
  • Calculation of system performance: nutrient removal, excess sludge production, oxygen demand and biogas production
  • Economic evaluation using annualized total investment costs and operational costs (aeration, sludge disposal, operation, etc.)
