Since the publication of the first edition of the Handbook in 2007 a lot has happened. For example, sales were much higher than anticipated, so that we're now down to the last hundred copies! However, we felt that simply printing a new batch of the current edition was not an option as so much new material had become available. First of all, based on the handbook an intensive design course has been developed. The feedback from these courses helped improve the didactic qualities of the book. Second, due to my work at Biothane Systems, now part of Veolia Water Solutions, I got the change to greatly expand my knowledge on anaerobic treatment. For example, I was heavily involved in the development of Upthane - Veolia's municipal UASB. Likewise, through Veolia's network of experts I managed to get contributions on interesting (new) technologies such as the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). As a result the book has been significantly expanded and rewritten. Roughly 100 pages of obsolete text have been removed while another 350 new pages have been added.
We've decided this time to leave the do-it-yourself approach in publishing, sales and distribution and go for a large international publishing house instead. The main reason was that the workload involved in back-office activities, administration and shipping was becoming excessive, while furthermore an significant upfront investment has to be made to publish a 1000 - 2000 copies. And one has to store them as well....
