About the Authors Logo of www.wastewaterhandbook.com

The authors of the Handbook Biological Wastewater Treatment are Adrianus van Haandel and Jeroen van der Lubbe. You might ask yourself why we decided to publish about half of our book on the Internet. Well, apart from eternal glory we hope that some of the visitors to our website actually consider the Handbook a valuable addition for their personal wastewater engineering library and buy the Handbook. It is a beautiful 560 pages hardcover edition, packed with information. Even if you don't buy it, we hope you use the design theory presented, as we truly feel that this will raise the level of the wastewater engineering practice. Do you want to know more about the handbook ? Our backcover tells you in no more than 300 words (287 to be precise) what the handbook is all about.

Jeroen van der Lubbe

To be filled with a photo of AdrianusAdrianus van Haandel (1948) holds an MSc degree from the University of Eindhoven in The Netherlands and a PhD from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He has worked at the University of Campina Grande in Brazil since 1971, where as a professor he coordinates research on biological waste water treatment.

Photo of JeroenJeroen van der Lubbe (1971) is a senior process engineer at Biothane Systems International, responsible for design of biological wastewater systems and product/knowledge development. He graduated in 1995 at the Environmental Department of the Wageningen University in the Netherlands

He has extensive experience as a consultant and is involved with a number of international expert committees. Together with other authors he has written several books about different aspects of waste water treatment including "Anaerobic sewage treatment in regions with a hot climate" and "Advanced biological treatment processes for industrial waste waters: principles and applications".

Since then he has been involved extensively in the design, engineering and operation of both industrial and municipal waste water treatment plants. Before joining Biothane, he worked at several leading wastewater consultancy and engineering firms.

Previous / additional publications

  • Anaerobic Sewage Treatment - A practical guide for regions with a hot climate - 1994 - Adrianus van Haandel and Gatze Lettinga, Wiley and Sons, ISBN 978-0471951216
  • Advanced Biological Treatment Processes for Industrial Wastewaters - Principles and appications - 2006 - Co-edited by Francisco Cervantes, Spiros Pavlostathis and Adrianus van Haandel, IWA Publishing, ISBN 1843391147

Many articles...links will be added shortly.

As for Jeroen, up until now he did not really pursue an academical and/or writing career. However, he did manage to build a house in the meantime. That should count for something, not ?

Acknowledgements

This book reflects the experience of the authors with different aspect of biological waste water treatment. Insofar as the theory of biological processes is concerned, it has very much been influenced by the ideas developed by the research group lead by Professor Gerrit Marais at the University of Cape Town - South Africa.

Another important input was the ongoing cooperative research program at several Brazilian universities, PROSAB, financed by the federal government through its agency FINEP. The experimental results generated by this group and the discussions, especially with Profs. Pedro Alem and Marcos von Sperling, constituted important contributions.

In the Netherlands, the following persons are personally acknowledged for their valuable input:

  • Merle de Kreuk at the Technical University Delft - for her review of the section on aerobic granular sludge
  • Wouter van der Star at the Technical University Delft - for his review of the Sharon/Anammox section
  • Darren Lawrence at Koch Membrane Systems and Hans Ramaekers at Triqua BV - for their contribution to the section on MBR technology
  • Sybren Gerbens at the Friesland Water Authority - for his input on treatment costs while he also provided several photos
  • André van Bentem at DHV BV and Joost de Haan at the Delfland Water Board who also supplied several interesting photos to fill up the white space.....

Furthermore the authors would like to acknowledge the financial support given by Biothane Systems International and Tebodin Consultants and Engineers, which greatly facilitated publishing of this book.

Finally a special word of thanks to the author's wives, Paula Frassinetti and Lotje van de Poll, for their unfailing support during the long incubation period in which this book was written.
